AMBITIOUS MACKEY: A short story written and completed on February 13th, 2025 (Rated R)

It was just another morning for Principal Mackey.
Cocaine and marijuana shipment coming in through the loading dock.
School funds mixed in with trafficking money.
Prostitutes on the way to first period, before they get passed around to adults on in the subdivisions for sex parties on the three day weekends, which Mackey sometimes attended with his swinger wife.
If any of the school gangs got out of line while dealing coke, it was an immediate suspension on some bullshit charge.
Mackey had an empire, but as much as he was boss, he wanted to be Superintendent. At thirty-five, there was still time for that. Maybe even head of State Education. Yeah, the fifties would be ripe for that.
He already proved himself by being a mob enforcer while an English professor during his twenties.
Following his initiation to the thirty third degree of Freemasonry, he got promoted to principal at thirty-three when he was a good earner for the Masons.
But today was different.
He was supposed to have a meeting with Superintendent Phillips, another thirty third degree Mason, who oversaw the different crime factions at the different high schools in the district.
Mackey just sat there at his desk, doing blow until Phillips arrived for his twelve pm meeting.
Phillips opened the door at eleven fifty-five am, startling Mackey.
"Gimme some of that", said Phillips.
"Have at it, boss", said Mackey.
Phillips takes the bow like meeting the Shah, and takes The Big Whiff.
Phillips didn't even have the courtesy to say thank you. But then again, Phillips was not known for being a man of manners.
"What did you want to see me about?", asked Mackey.
"Well, here's the thing: I'm thinking about replacing you."
"What? Why?", asked Mackey.
"You're way too pepped up. Everybody knows you as the most enthusiastic principal in the district, but.this is way out of line. It's becoming obvious you're on coke."
"But.we deal the coke."
"Of course we do. But we got to keep it low key. Plus.various students are dying from the product."
"Oh, come on. They can't trace that back to us."
"Sure they can. When parents find out we're traffickers and crime bosses, we hang from nooses."
For the first time in thirty minutes, Mackey was concerned. Not worried, just concerned. He should be freaking out right now, but he was still feeling confident from the coke. And his arrogant personality. It was cyclical, but he just ignored it and rolled on.
"I gotta replace you, Mack.", said Phillips.
"You promised me I would be superintendent when you retired!"
"You're blowing our cover. We're becoming exposed. This is a containment measure. Sorry, Mack. But you gotta go."
Now Mackey was starting to freak out. Usually, he doesn't. But this was special.
Mackey stood up from his seat, and walked to the office door.
"You know, Bill, I think you're making a big mistake in trying to replace me.", said Mackey, as he locked the door.
"Not a mistake at all. It's a safety precaution for the organization.", says Phillips.
Mackey took off his tie.
"Oh, I'm all for safety", said Mackey. "However, I think this family, as you called it and welcomed me into, could use different vision and different direction."
That is when Mackey wrapped his tie around Phillips's neck, and strangled him to death. Phillips tried to resist, but Mackey was so coked up that he had the extra strength. It was a violent bout, but eventually, within thirty seconds, Phillips went down for the count.
Phillips just sat there, mouth open, eyes bulging, stiff as a doornail, head tilted upward, staring at the endless abyss of eternal contempt.

That's when the twelve pm lunch bell finally rang.
